  • Description:

An excellent all original German Wheel-lock built by a noted maker Friedrich Bickel of Durlach Baden.  This maker became a master gunmaker in 1663.  See" Der Stockel "page 99.  In 1675 he was granted his gunmark as noted.  This touch mark is located on the barrel together with his name.  This example shows a 29" multi 62 caliber grooved rifled barrel with an excellent bore.  The lock plate is the traditional style 7 1/2 overall with a 5 1/2" cock that is engraved turned. The wood remains in excellent plus condition with no evidence of repair.  The European walnut shows striping on the forwood and is mounted with its original rammer.  The rod is mounted with a 5 1/4" iron threaded tip and a carved bone fortip.  All of the bone fitting remain in excellent plus condition and shows the identical carving and finish.  There are five animal engraved inlays with hunting dogs and various animals. The right side of the butt shows a sliding cover box that houses the lock wrench.  The maker, Friedrich Bickel (1663-1700), was employed by the Margrave of Baden and was probaly appointed as the gunmaker to the court.  Further research should provide additional information on this recognized maker.  This piece is an above average museum quality Wheellock that seldom appears on the Canadian market for sale.
