  • Description:

SN 18404 is a Whitney Navy Revolver which is an example of one that was actually issued to the U.S. Navy.  The barrel is 7 3/4", 36 caliber with a bright excellent 7 grove bore.  The original blue on the barrel rates at 70%, showing normal service usage marks at the "E Whitney N Haven" marking.  The brass blade sight was a replacement of the issue brass pin type.  The rammer shows SN 22704.  The cylinder shows 23155.  Mismatched number on service pistols of this type are not uncommon especially if they went for service in naval armouries.  This piece shows the seldom encounted inspectors mark.  The left side of the frame shows the marking. F.C.W. (Franklin C. Warner). This inspector was with the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ordenance.  As per the records he inspected only 900 Whitney Navy Revolvers.  This example shows no cylinder engraving which is basically standard for these Whitneys.  The frame , loading lever and hammer show no original finish.  The original black walnut grips show the serial number matching the cylinder. A less common revolver as issued to the Civil War Union Navy.  This example is mechanically sound.  Antique Status.
