  • Description:

We are pleased to offer a very scarce WW1 Pneumatic Mortar or mini artillery piece.  We have not been able to identify the actual manufacture or model of this unique WW1 weapon. Fortunately,we were contacted by a knowledgable person who advised us that this is a Austro-Hungarian Luftminenwerfer. We do know that this is one of the items as brought to Canada by the C.E.F. at the end of WW1.  Many years ago it was traded to the former owner who is now deceased.  This piece is approximately 43 MM or 1 & 5/8 " bore in a 25 1/2" barrel.  At the base of the barrel it is missings a tank & sealing cup that the barrel butted up to. The barrel was then rapidly pressurized which forced the round to be expelled. The barrel unit is secured by two brass collars and wing nuts to the upper carriage.  There is an elevation wheel mounted on the right side which allows the barrel to be elevated to approximately 75% degrees.  The carriage/barrel unit is mounted on a steel base that is approximately 30" long, 21" across the back end and tapering to 10" at the front.  The metal shows areas of pitting but is totally intact.  The barrel elevator work and functions perfectly.  The barrel unit and carriage swivels and traverses approximately 25 degrees to either side.  These pneumatic mortars were used on the Italian front. According to the information as given to us these were used to prevent possible avalanches that might be triggered by conventional artillery.  This unique pneumatic mortar remains in excellent condition for its age and usage.  A piece for the serious WW1 or military collector.  I do not think there is another example in any Canadian Collection.  Not subject to restrictions.
