  • Description:

We are pleased to re offer an English Pattern 1853 Enfield as issued to and used by the Confederate States during the U.S. Civil war.  For reference in this description we refer to "The English Connection" by Pritchard and Huey, a 2014 book, 608 pages of information, photographs and information on the Arms and material as supplied to the CSA by Great Britain.  The item as offered is an 1853 Commercial Enfield, dated 1862.  This piece shows a 39" rifled barrel.  The bore shows obvious corrosion and traces of rifling.  The lock shows clear sharp markings, crown and 1862 date over Tower. The barrel shows the Birmingham proofs.  The stock shows the Birmingham small arms trade roundel as per page 99 of the aforesaid reference.  The anchor mark remains on the comb of the stock forward of the buttplate tang.  The bottom of the buttstock shows the name J. Bourne listed as a Birmingham furnisher of Arms to the Confederates see pages 99 and 100.  Note: this musket was previously sold and shipped.  It was broken by Canada Post despite being fully insurable.  Canada Post refused to pay under their insurance plan. This piece was professionally repaired and now shows little if any indication of the damage inflicted by Canada Post.  This is an excellent example of a Civil War Confederate Enfield showing all the markings as noted in the aforementioned reference.
