  • Description:

This rifle is owned by and was built by one of the world's most recognized single shot rifle experts "Jonathan Kirton". Jonathan is known for the books which he has authored on the subject of single shot rifles, especially the British falling block rifles. The piece as offered is a custom rifle built on the action of an original 1878 Sharp Borchardt. The rifle was acquired in poor condition and was rebuilt to its current form. The original 8099 serial number was retained. The custom work is as follows. The action and retraction plates were re-contoured and hardened by the late Joseph Elsener of Montreal. (The inventor and developer of the Elsener water cannon and cartridge used for bomb disposal.) The stocking was hand carved, checkered and finished by Jonathan; including fitting the Neidner style the checkered buttplate. In addition he filed and made the quick-release scope mounts. Fitted with a custom Swiss Hammerli .224" barrel, chambered for the Australian .222 rimmed cartridge was mounted by the late Elwood Epps at Clinton, Ontario, the barrel being contoured to match the external contours of the original Sharps "Old Reliable" .45-70 caliber barrel. The action was engraved, and signed, by the late Heidi Hiptmayer of Quebec, who was trained as a gun engraver at the famous Ferlach school in Austria prior to emigrating to Canada. The engraving style follows that of the famous 1876 U.S. Centennial Sharps Model 1875 display rifle. Heidi Hiptmayer was widely recognized as a world class engraver. The receiver is finished in French gray, with the engraved areas blued, all of which was completed by Klaus Hiptmayer. The rifle was mounted with a 6X Pecar Scope, which was fully restored by the Pecar factory in East Berlin in 1972. The right side of the receiver bears the name "J. G. Kirton" and the rifle's completion date of 1972. It has fired a few hundred rounds and is extremely accurate. A June 1973 target is included 98/100. This piece comes in a Gunho padded hard case with 4 boxes of fired cases; a set of RCBS dies and an original .45-70 1878 Sharps barrel from another rifle. This second barrel can be easily mounted on the action. The only thing needed is a .45-70 extractor, which are readily available. This is a very fine Canadian built custom Sharps Borchardt, all of the work to create it having been undertaken in Canada by recognized Canadians.
